The 411 on Sleep Positions

For something so simple, sleep is not an easy thing. Too little and too much of sleep has been linked to cause health problems. Sleep positions has also been proven to cause health problems, especially for children. It is also linked to wrinkles, snoring and heart burns. It is therefore important to sleep in a position that has no effect on one’s health.

There are 3 main types of sleeping position, that is:

  • Side
  • Back and
  • Stomach

Sleep experts recommend the side position as it decreases the possibility of interrupted sleep and is more comfortable. Sleeping on your side is encouraged during pregnancy as it improves blood circulation to the heart which benefits the mother and the baby. For others, sleeping especially on the left side also eases acid reflux and heart-burns which make it easy for people with such conditions to sleep.

Sleeping on the back leaves the neck in a neutral position which makes breathing easier. It is also associated with back pains, snoring and episodes of apnea thus interfering with the normal sleep. Although 90% of doctors suggest that sleeping on the back is the best sleeping position (as causes least stress on the spine), specialized research found out that this is the worst position as it causes:

  • Asthma and allergy for wheezing kids.
  • Back pain for pregnancies.
  • Chronic respiratory insufficiency.
  • Irregular breathing.
  • Stroke in elderly patients.

Sleeping on the stomach is regarded the worst sleeping position. Sleep experts do not recommend sleeping on the stomach as it causes strain on the lower back and neck pain. People who sleep on the stomach are said to experience restlessness which is caused by frequent turning in attempts to get comfortable.

Regardless of the health benefits attributed to different sleeping positions, experimenting with these positions will do no harm except for pregnant mothers who have to stick to the position best for them as recommended by experts. So, unless a doctor recommends a certain position, it is best to sleep on the position that you feel is right
